What Questions Should You Ask Other Students on a College Visit?

By Sarah M.
When you visit a college campus, admissions tours and official presentations can tell you a lot—but if you really want to understand what life is like there, talk to the students. They live the day-to-day reality of the school, from classes and professors to dorm life and campus culture. Asking the right questions can give you insights you won’t find in rankings or brochures.
Here are four thoughtful questions to ask students when visiting a college campus.
1. What do students usually do on weekends?
Campus life doesn’t stop when classes end on Friday. Asking about weekend activities helps you understand the social atmosphere of the school. Do students stay on campus, or does everyone leave for home? Are there clubs, events, sports, or performances that people attend? You might also learn whether the social scene revolves around parties, outdoor activities, Greek life, student organizations, city life, etc.
2. How accessible are the professors?
Strong academics depend not just on course content but also on how approachable professors are. Ask students whether professors hold regular office hours, respond to emails, and are willing to help when someone is struggling. Students can also tell you if classes feel collaborative or impersonal. Do professors know students by name? Do they encourage discussion and dissent? Do they offer mentorship for research, internships, or career paths?
3. What do you wish you had known before coming here?
This is a vulnerable question that invites honesty. Students will often share insights that aren’t obvious from promotional materials—things like how challenging the workload is, how competitive the environment feels, or what housing or food are really like. You might also hear about hidden perks of the campus, like great spots to study or take a walk, supportive resources, or unexpected opportunities.
4. Do students feel supported here?
College can be exciting, but it can also be stressful. Asking about support systems helps you understand how the school takes care of its students. You might hear about academic advising, pastoral care, mental health resources, tutoring services, career centers, or mentorship programs. Students can also share whether they feel comfortable asking for help and whether the campus community is welcoming and inclusive.
Campus visits are your chance to look past marketing materials and see what a college is really like. By asking thoughtful questions—about campus life, academics, support systems, and day-to-day experiences—you’ll gain insights that help you decide whether the school truly fits your goals and personality.
