Tailoring Essays to a College’s Ethos

By Lan N.
When writing college application essays, one of the best opportunities to stand out is the “Why Us?” or “Why Major at Our School?” essay. These prompts are an invitation to demonstrate how you align with the school’s ethos, including its values, mission, and the ways the school lives those out.
Step 1: Research the College’s Ethos
Begin by studying the college’s values, which is often highlighted on the college’s website. Values might include respect, discovery, and excellence. Next, look at the mission statement, which usually explains how the school supports those values. A mission statement might be, for example, challenging students to think critically. Finally, pay close attention to initiatives and centers. These are tangible ways the college acts on its mission, whether it’s a prize celebrating innovation, a center dedicated to environmental leadership, or programs that emphasize civic engagement.
Step 2: Connect the Ethos to Your Experience
Once you understand the school’s identity, show how it resonates with your own journey. For example, if a college emphasizes STEM innovation, you might highlight your summer research in chemistry or an independent coding project. If the school values civic engagement, you could connect your internship in city government or impact in a service club. By grounding your essay in both the college’s values and your experiences, you demonstrate fit.
Step 3: Explain How You’ll Contribute
Colleges want to know how you’ll enrich their community. Use your research to identify specific ways to contribute:
- Research opportunities: Point to a research lab or project that excites you, explain why it interests you, and share what skills or perspectives you would bring.
- Student organizations: If a group aligns with your interests and experience, describe how you would get involved and give an example of what you’ve done that shows you’re ready to contribute.
- Campus initiatives: Show how you would engage with a campus initiative. For instance, if you’re interested in the college’s annual student prize for creativity in interdisciplinary studies, explain why you’re interested, share an idea you want to pursue in that area, and how you would execute that idea.
By incorporating the college’s ethos, your experiences, and your future contributions, your essay will be true to you and filled with details that show admissions officers why you’re a good match.
