Submitting College Applications Early? Learn what to Double-Check

By Jennifer L.

With application deadlines fast approaching, many students are excited to hit “submit” early—a smart strategy that can reduce stress and prevent last-minute issues. But before you finalize your application, it’s worth slowing down to double-check the details. Small mistakes can create confusion for admissions officers or misrepresent your accomplishments. Here are a few key areas to review carefully before submitting your application:

1. Accuracy in Personal Information
It may sound obvious, but errors in basic details like your name, address, phone number or school information can cause headaches later. Make sure your legal name matches across your application, transcript, and test scores. Double-check your email address, since colleges will use it for important communication.

2. Clarity in Activities and Honors
The activities section is often the trickiest part. Space is limited, so each entry should be clear, specific, and reflective of your impact. Avoid jargon or acronyms an admissions officer might not recognize. For example, “Club Treasurer” tells less of a story than “Managed $2,000 annual budget for Robotics Club.” Similarly, make sure your honors and awards are listed in the correct order of significance and spelled correctly.

3. Final Review of Essays
Your personal statement and supplemental essays deserve a final read with fresh eyes. Look for typos, but also ask yourself: does this essay sound like me? Is it answering the prompt directly? Reading your essay out loud can help catch awkward phrasing, and having a trusted teacher, counselor, or family member give one last review is invaluable.

A Quick Pre-Submission Checklist
As you review your applications, it helps to think in terms of a checklist:

· Confirm personal information is correct (name, address, email)

· Double-check GPA, course lists, and test scores if included

· Proofread essays for grammar, clarity, and prompt alignment

· Review activities and honors for completeness and clarity

· Verify any supplemental questions are answered correctly

· Ensure all required attachments are uploaded

· Confirm recommendations have been submitted

· Check that your submission aligns with Early Action, Early Decision, or Regular Decision deadlines

Submitting early is an excellent goal—but accuracy is more important than speed. Taking the extra time to double-check your application ensures that every detail is correct and reflects your best self. With a careful review, you can submit confidently, focus on the next steps of your college journey, and feel proud knowing that you’ve presented yourself in the strongest possible way to admissions officers.
