With application deadlines fast approaching, many students are excited to hit “submit” early—a smart strategy that can reduce stress and prevent last-minute issues. But before you finalize your application, it’s worth slowing down to double-check the details. Small mistakes can create confusion for admissions officers or misrepresent your accomplishments. Here are a few key areas to review carefully before submitting your application:
1. Accuracy in Personal Information
It may sound obvious, but errors in basic details like your name, address, phone number or school information can cause headaches later. Make sure your legal name matches across your application, transcript, and test scores. Double-check your email address, since colleges will use it for important communication.
2. Clarity in Activities and Honors
The activities section is often the trickiest part. Space is limited, so each entry should be clear, specific, and reflective of your impact. Avoid jargon or acronyms an admissions officer might not recognize. For example, “Club Treasurer” tells less of a story than “Managed $2,000 annual budget for Robotics Club.” Similarly, make sure your honors and awards are listed in the correct order of significance and spelled correctly.
3. Final Review of Essays
Your personal statement and supplemental essays deserve a final read with fresh eyes. Look for typos, but also ask yourself: does this essay sound like me? Is it answering the prompt directly? Reading your essay out loud can help catch awkward phrasing, and having a trusted teacher, counselor, or family member give one last review is invaluable.
