Planning Ahead: Your 2026-27 College Admissions Timeline

By: Justin B

Throughout my years of guiding students through the college application process, I have found that the biggest source of stress is usually not the difficulty of completing the Common App or writing essays. It is failing to leave enough time to do that work well. Far too often, even the highest-achieving students find themselves working on a supplemental essay only two days before the submission deadline. Knowing the key dates and planning well in advance are essential to maximizing the quality of your applications while minimizing unnecessary stress.

August 1, 2026: Applications Open

The application season begins in earnest on August 1.

● The 2026–27 Common Application opens.

● Many colleges release their supplemental essay questions.

● The University of California application becomes available.

● Students can begin working in Cal State Apply, although CSU applications cannot be submitted until October 1.

August is a good time to finalize your college list, begin writing essays, and request recommendation letters.

Early Decision and Early Action

Many early application deadlines fall on November 1 or November 15.

● Early Decision: A binding option. Students admitted through ED are expected to enroll and withdraw their other applications.

● Early Action: A nonbinding option. Students receive an earlier decision but may decline the offer or wait until the spring to choose a college.

● Restrictive or Single-Choice Early Action: Also nonbinding, but limits where else a student may apply early.

Because policies vary, students should carefully review each college’s rules before selecting an early application plan.

University of California

The UC system uses its own application.

● Application opens: August 1, 2026

● Submission period: October 1 through November 30, 2026

● Students may apply to multiple UC campuses through the same application.

California State University

Students applying to CSU campuses use Cal State Apply.

● Application work begins: August 1, 2026

● Submission period: October 1 through November 30, 2026

Certain campuses, majors, and specialized programs may have different requirements or deadlines.

Regular and Rolling Admission

● Regular Decision deadlines: Commonly early January through early February

● Decision notifications: Usually March or early April

● Rolling admission: Applications are reviewed as they are received

Applying earlier to rolling-admission colleges can be helpful because space in certain programs, scholarships, and housing may become more limited later.

Financial Aid

● 2027–28 FAFSA: Expected to become available by October 1, 2026

● CSS Profile: Opens October 1

● College and state deadlines: Vary

Students should check each college’s financial aid requirements and submit all forms as early as possible.

May 1, 2027: College Decision Day

May 1 is the traditional deadline to accept an admission offer and submit an enrollment deposit.

Students should also track deadlines for essays, transcripts, recommendations, test scores, scholarships, portfolios, and other required materials. Creating one calendar for the entire process, with personal deadlines set ahead of the official ones, can help protect both the quality of your work and your peace of mind.
