Jaw-dropping College Admissions Results 2023

by Tony T.

The Year of 2023 has proven to be another incredible year in college admissions.

With the test-optional policy in place for most colleges, dramatically increasing applications caused a dramatic drop of the admission rate for some schools.

With a jaw-dropping 120,000 applications for Class 2027, NYU admitted 9,600 applicants with a historic low admission rate of 8%, compared to Class 2026’s 105,000 applications with the admission rate of 12.2%.

Incredible? Yes.

Northeastern leads the list for two years in a row. With a whopping 96,327 applications over last year’s record high of 91,000 of the Class 2026, Northeastern University’s Class 2027 admission rate has  dropped to around 6.5%, similarly to an Ivy League or top tier school in the nation and makes it even harder to get in than another elite college – Northwestern University (with a 7% admission rate this year).

Incredible again.

Meanwhile, UCLA and UC Berkeley remain the most popular colleges in terms of application numbers, with 145,882 and 125,874 applications respectively. They shall have single digit admission rates for the Class of 2027. Up to today, UCs have not announced their admission data for Fall 2023 enrollment, which may be released early 2024.

What will be the trend for the Class of 2028? More colleges will reinstate the standardized test requirement as the pandemic will be officially announced as over soon this year and testing is back to normal. But colleges with test optional policy will remain the majority, which means the competition is still white hot for some selective colleges. To different colleges, changing admission policies in many aspects other than test-optional would be challenging as well.
