How Important Is Your Essay for College Admissions?

by Lan N.
A great essay alone will not determine whether you’re accepted to a college, but it can be a critical factor, especially at highly selective colleges, for several reasons.
The Deciding Factor
Think of your grades and test scores as the quantifiable foundation of your application.
If an admissions officer is deciding between you and another applicant with identical numbers, your essay could make a difference. It’s an important piece of the application that says who you are.
That Extra “Oomph”
Your essay is your chance to give your application some sparkle. Admissions officers are human, too. If your essay convinces them that they have to meet you, that feeling could tip the admissions committee’s decision in your favor.
Revealing Your Hidden Dimensions
An essay can be especially important if your application appears one-noted. For example, if your extracurriculars and classes are focused on math, you can use your essay as a vehicle to show that you’re more than a “math person”.
Perhaps you enjoy making miniatures, including tiny furniture and accessories. This hobby might make an appearance in your activities list, but your essay provides the space for the wonderful details of your miniature worlds and your “why” behind it.
Building a Dynamic Community
Small liberal arts colleges may put additional weight on essays to gauge campus fit. A campus that has a small student population wouldn’t want to admit a class in which all the students were alike. How much would you learn if all your classmates were just like you? It simply would not be interesting.
A Window into Your Mind
A college essay builds a door for admissions officers to walk into your mind and see how you think.
For example, for the 2025-2026 admissions cycle, one of Swarthmore College’s supplemental essay prompts asked applicants to share a topic that fascinated them and how it connected to their other interests.
You may have high scores on AP exams, but how do you process the world? What connections do you make as the wheels of your mind churn? The essay is an important element in answering those questions.
While quantifiable achievements are foundational in college applications, admissions officers read your essays to understand who you are.
