How to Craft a Strong Activities List for College Applications

By Justin B.
For high school juniors, college applications may feel far away, but beginning to prepare for your activities list now can make it much easier to complete it later. The activities list is an important part of both the Common Application and University of California application, helping admissions officers understand how you spend your time, what you care about, and how you’ve grown outside the classroom. Here are a few key tips to get started.
1. Start gathering details now
You don’t need polished descriptions yet, but you do need accurate information. Begin compiling a list of all your activities, including clubs, sports, jobs, research, volunteering, and family responsibilities. Be sure to note key details such as dates of involvement, hours per week, weeks per year, and leadership roles. Having this ready in advance will make application season far less stressful.
2. Focus on what you actually did
Strong activity lists capture what you’ve specifically accomplished, not just titles you’ve held. Admissions officers want to see your real contributions, so go beyond labels like “President” or “Team Member” and clearly describe the actions you took. For example, rather than simply writing “Volunteer,” you could write, “Organized weekly food drives, coordinating more than 50 donations each month.”
3. Collect evidence of participation
As you track your activities, gather supporting documentation such as supervisors’ names, certificates, awards, or project materials. Having evidence ready makes it easier to write specific, verifiable descriptions when filling out applications.
4. Keep everything organized
Maintain all activity details in one document or spreadsheet and update it periodically. Organization now will save time later.
By starting early, staying organized, and tracking your activities carefully, your list will be stronger, easier to complete, and will present your achievements in the best possible light next fall.
