Post–Winter Break College Planning Checklist

By Jennifer L.
Coming back from winter break can feel like being dropped straight into fast-forward. Before the semester gets too busy, take a moment to reset and refocus on your college preparation journey. No matter what grade you’re in, what you do now can make the rest of the year more intentional—and far less stressful later on.
1. Start or Continue Your College Research
If you’ve already started a college research list, now is a great time to refine it. Ask yourself: Do these schools still fit my academic interests and learning style? If you haven’t started a list yet, that’s okay—start by exploring broadly. Look at majors, campus size, location, research opportunities, and campus culture. Attend virtual tours and information sessions that can help you learn more about the college and its community. The goal right now is exploration.
2. Set Goals for Your Extracurriculars
As spring approaches, think about how you want to grow in your activities. Instead of just showing up, ask yourself how you can take on more responsibility or make a deeper impact. This might mean stepping into a leadership role, launching a project you care about, or committing more seriously to one or two activities you genuinely enjoy. Colleges care more about meaningful involvement than doing everything.
3. Make a Plan for Standardized Testing
If you plan to take the SAT or ACT this spring or fall, use this time to map out your testing strategy. Decide which test you’ll take, when you’ll take it, and how you’ll prepare. Creating a manageable study plan now—whether through self-study or a prep program—can help you avoid cramming and reduce stress later in the year.
4. Start Thinking About Summer
Summer might feel far away, but many programs have deadlines in January and early February. Begin researching summer programs, internships, jobs, research opportunities, or volunteer experiences that align with your interests. A thoughtful summer plan can strengthen your college application and help you explore what excites you.
5. Check In With Yourself
Finally, take a moment to reflect. What worked well last semester? What do you want to improve? Write down goals and keep track of deadlines. Staying organized now will pay off later.
Winter break may be over, but this reset can help you move into the spring with clarity, confidence, and purpose!
