A Quick College Admissions Timeline: Key Dates for UCs, Ivies, & More

Applying to college can be stressful, but knowing the timeline makes everything easier. Whether you’re aiming for the University of California (UC) schools, Ivy League universities, or other top choices, staying on top of key dates is essential. This quick admissions timeline breaks down what to do—and when—to help you stay organized and ahead of the game.

August 1, 2025 – Opening Day!
The application season for students intending to start college in Fall 2026 opens on August 1, 2025.  At that time, most college applications across the United States become available.

Early Decision (ED) – Binding commitment
If you’re admitted, you must withdraw all other college applications and enroll at that institution.
Deadline: November 1 or November 15.
Common at Ivy League schools and selective private colleges.

Early Action (EA) – Non-Binding commitment
If you’re admitted, you will be notified early of your acceptance, but you do not need to commit to that school.
Deadline: November 1 or November 15.
Common at institutions such as Stanford, Harvard, MIT, University of Michigan, Notre Dame

University of California (UC System)
Application Opens: August 1
Submission Window:  October 1 – December 1

Cal State (CSU System)
Application Window:  October 1 – November 30

Regular Decision (RD)
Deadline: Typically, January 1 or January 15
Admissions notifications are released in March or early April
Common at most U.S. colleges and Universities

Rolling Admissions
Deadline:  Varies, typically August – March

Colleges review applications as they are submitted.

Common at institutions such as Penn State, Indiana University, University of Arizona, Arizona State University

National College Decision Day: May 1
This is the final deadline for students to confirm their enrollment at the institution they plan to attend in the fall.

Financial Aid Key Dates

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid): Opens October 1.  Deadlines vary by institution.

CSS Profile – Opens October 1.  Used primarily by private colleges and universities to determine eligibility for institutional (non-federal) aid.  Deadlines vary by institution and application type.

Keep a calendar of each school’s specific deadlines, including those for document submissions such as for transcripts and test score reports.  The earlier you organize, the less stressful senior year will be.

Good luck – your future is just a few steps (and dates) away!
