Supplemental Essays: Writing About Diversity

by Molly R.

A common essay supplement prompt for college applications asks students to share more about their identity, race, cultural background, or why inclusivity is important to them. These diversity essay prompts also ask students to share how they will contribute to a thriving, diverse student body.

While it may be tempting to write only about race, cultural identity, or ethnicity in this diversity essay, at IvyBoost we encourage applicants to think more about what makes applicants unique. Use this diversity question to tell a story about something special about you and how you will bring this genuine uniqueness to the college you are applying to.

One way to write about diversity is to think of your identity. Identity refers to the distinguishing character or personality of an individual. Our identities change over our lives and encompasses the memories, lived experiences, relationships and values that create one’s sense of self.

Is there a part of your identity that you want admissions counselors to know about you? One student might write about how their extensive collection of keychains connects them to their travels and family members across the globe. Another student might write about how they volunteered at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter as a way to give back in their community.

Perhaps you grew up in a non-traditional household or you have a grandparent who doesn’t speak English. Or perhaps none of that happened–and that’s fine. You don’t need to win the diversity olympics! This is also a time to think of some of your accomplishments.

  • What are some of your achievements inside and outside the classroom?
  • Any unique hobbies or travel interests?
  • What is noteworthy about your childhood? What is your relationship like with your parents or siblings?
  • What is your role typically like in group projects?

You can also connect the diversity supplement to the college. Typically, diversity essay questions will also include a caveat of “How will you contribute to the community at XXX college?” Admission officers want to know how you will positively enhance the campus environment.

Research the various clubs and extracurriculars and academic departments at the college you are applying to and share how you will get involved. Is there a faculty member you are looking forward to meeting? A class you can’t wait to take?

Demonstrate your research and your keen interest in the college. By showcasing how you will positively contribute to the college campus as an active and engaged student, you are also highlighting your personal distinctiveness and individuality with an eye towards making the college a better place, which will make your diversity essay stand out.
