AMC

AMC at IvyBoost

IvyBoost is happy to announce that AMC Competitive Math courses will be offered here in Fremont this school year!

In these national math competitions, students learn how to think critically and combine concepts across advanced algebra, probability, and geometry.

Success in the AMC can strengthen student profiles for college admissions and build problem solving skills essential to any academic endeavor. In fact, elite schools like MIT, Harvard, Caltech, and Carnegie Mellon University all have dedicated questions on their application asking for these scores.

At IvyBoost, students will have an opportunity to learn from instructors who have taken and succeeded at these difficult and prestigious contests.

Schedule

AMC 8, 10 and 12 sessions last 10-15 weeks starting from September 21st.

The AMC classes will be led by Mr. Hunter L., Dr. Larry S. and Mr. Jeff C.

Hunter L.

Hunter graduated from Columbia University and Occidental College with degrees in applied math and physics. From this background, he had the opportunity to be under the guidance of many passionate professors that helped him learn to appreciate and understand mathematics. Following in the footsteps of these inspirational individuals, Hunter is dedicated to maximizing each student’s potential. Since each student approaches math problems in a slightly different way, he finds that the best method of helping students is by tailoring explanations to fit their personal learning styles.

Hunter has years of experience helping students in a wide array of math courses. While he now specializes in high school math (algebra, geometry and pre-calc), he has also helped students with college level courses such as calculus. In addition to subject tutoring, Hunter has also helped students improve their math scores on standardized tests (SAT, ACT). He also has experience with the GRE and math competitions including the AMC.

Dr. Larry S.

Larry has been teaching mathematics for the last 35 years. For the last 20 years he has taught at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he has also coached their students for the Putnam Competition, the preeminent undergraduate math competition for the USA and Canada. He has also administered the AMC exams and helped with MATHCOUNTS. He is also the director of the Cal Poly Math Department tutoring program.

Larry enjoys solving math problems in his spare time and his research interests include combinatory and number theory. His two daughters attend Crossroads for the Arts and Sciences and Juilliard. Larry earned his Ph.D. from Penn State and Masters from UCLA in mathematics and his BS. in Computer Sciences from LSU.

Jeff C.

Jeff will be attending UCLA this fall with a Regents Scholarship, and he will be studying one of UCLA’s strongest majors: applied mathematics. His competing offers include Carnegie Mellon University and Brown University, and he attributes his success in college applications to extensive participation in national math competitions.

Since he started Math Olympiad programs in 6th grade, he has fallen in love with the challenging but rewarding nature of these competitions. Combining mathematical concepts with out-of-the-box critical thinking, Jeffrey sees each problem as an enigmatic puzzle, its alluring secrets locked behind a facade of variables and symbols. He seeks to share this passion for competitive problem solving, and IvyBoost is the next step after teaching at elementary school teams and other local tutoring organizations. Jeffrey’s academic success includes Distinguished Honor Roll on the AMC 10, multiple AIME qualifications, USACO Platinum, status as a National Merit Scholar, and one of 112 students to earn every point possible on the AP Computer Science A exam.
