SAT Math

General Introduction:

The Math section of the SAT tests the student on math skills within the reach of a tenth grade student – Pre-Algebra, Geometry, Algebra I and Algebra II. While scoring well on the test is a good indicator that the student has a solid grasp of these mathematical topics, having a thorough knowledge of these topics itself does not always translate into a high score. In addition to covering these topics in our course, we will simultaneously teach the student the methods of applying the knowledge to the test, ensuring that they are familiar with the test and able to approach it with confidence.

Instruction Content:

 I. Pre-Algebra :    A. Numbers and Operations;  B. Laws of Arithmetic; C. Fractions, Decimals, Percents, and Proportions; D. Negatives; E. Divisibility

II. Algebra I:          A. Solving Equations;  B. Systems; C. Working with Exponentials and Roots; D. Factoring; E. Inequalities and Absolute Values

III. Geometry:       A. Lines and Angles; B. Triangles; C. The Pythagorean Theorem; D. Coordinate Geometry; E. Areas and Perimeters; F. Similar Figures;                                                                     G. Volumes and 3-D  Geometry; H. Circles

IV. Algebra II:        A. Sequences:  B. Functions; C. Transformations and Variations; D. Data Analysis; E. Negative and Fractional Exponents

V. Miscellaneous:  A. Number Theory; B. Mean/Media/Mode Problems; C. Numerical Reasoning Problems; D. Counting and Probability Problems;                                                                               E.  Rate Problems; F. Symbol/Term Problems, etc.

Tests and Homework:

Homework reviewing the topics covered will be assigned after each lesson. The assignments serve not only as an assessment of the student’s knowledge to make sure he/she fully understands the concepts, but also as a way to allow the student to put their knowledge into practice.

Tests will include selections of SAT questions covering a particular topic, as well as comprehensive SAT math sections to test the student in an environment very similar to the actual SAT test.

Prerequisites:

Algebra II highly recommended. Some basic Geometry knowledge preferred, but not required.
