Receiving a college waitlist notification from an institution can be both frustrating and hopeful.  Recognize that being waitlisted is not a rejection!  It means the admissions committee sees the potential in your application, but needs to wait to make final decisions.

While the continued uncertainty is challenging, there are a few steps and 3 tips you can take to navigate the situation effectively.

Tip 1: Follow Instructions +  Craft Letter of Continued Interest (if applicable)

First, stay positive and follow instructions!   Rather than dwelling on the uncertainties of the waitlist, focus on the fact that you are still in contention for admission.  Read any instructions or information provided by the college carefully.  Some schools may have specific steps for students to take in order to participate in the waitlist process.

If an institution gives you the opportunity to submit a Letter of Continued Interest, respond promptly and professionally.  Craft a thoughtful letter expressing your continued interest in the college. Highlight specific aspects of the school that appeal to you and any recent academic achievements or activities since you submitted your application.  Reinforce your commitment to the school and express gratitude for the opportunity to continue to be considered for admission.

Tip 2: Supplementary Materials & Updates

Secondly, if the institution provides an option to submit supplementary materials to bolster your application, be sure to follow up.  Many institutions welcome updated resumes, additional letters of recommendation, or recent academic achievements such as publications or portfolios.  Take time to tailor these materials to showcase your growth and accomplishments since submitting your application.

Tip 3: Make a choice for another college for an alternative plan

Lastly, explore your alternative options.  While waiting for a final decision on your waitlist status, it’s essential to keep the broader picture in mind.  This proactive approach ensures that you have a great alternative plan in case the waitlist doesn’t materialize into an acceptance.  If you are eventually accepted off the waitlist, you can reassess your options at that time. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket and be prepared for any outcome.

Facing a waitlist situation requires a combination of optimism, proactivity, and strategic planning.  By using these 3 tips for staying engaged, submitting additional information and material, and considering alternative options, you can navigate the uncertainties of the waitlist process with resilience and positivity.
