3 Recommended Books for High School Students

high school student reading

For students, the phrase ‘spring break’ usually heralds a time full of sunshine, adventure, and relaxation.

It also gives you both the space and time to catch up on some reading and reflection. Perhaps you have a quiet moment or two during a long trip, or you would like to bring some reading while sitting by a refreshing breeze near a lake.

For students who want to learn how to write better, check out the 3 recommended books below to feed your reading and writing skills over spring break!

1. Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott
Out of the many writing-related books I’ve had to read from writing-focused college classes, this is one of the few that I’ve kept, and can give a personal recommendation on.

The prose, description, feelings, and tips that Lamott gives throughout each chapter are both distinctive and memorable. Student could also strongly relate to the chapter explaining the origin of her book’s title, from an incident where her brother had procrastinated on an important school report.

2. Because Internet by Gretchen McCulloch
Though this recommendation is less a writing book and more an analysis of language, the topic is both understandable and relevant for any student’s life. How does McCulloch use her writing to explain, break down, and highlight something as intangible as the ebb and flow of language used online? What does she show about the changes of language between age groups, cliques, and digital communities?

3. Choose a nonfiction book on writing or a memoir that interests you
Perhaps you’re interested in knowing more about the life of a famous artist, musician, or founder of a company. A quick search would bring up more than a few book lists for students to choose from.
Or if you like to include an element of chance to picking your reading, you could use a number generator between 1-100, and browse through a list of other writing-focused books, like these.

With these recommended books, as a high school student, you can fend off boredom and satisfy your curiosity during your down time in spring!
