UCs Weigh Costs of Limiting Out-of-State Students

Most colleges see great benefits in having a mix of in-state and out-of-state students.

However, due to increased fears about college admissions from Californians, the University of California colleges are taking another look at the number of out-of-state students on their campuses.

So what are the benefits and the disadvantages of out-of-state students in UCs?

Pros

  • Greater diversity of voices and cultures on campus
  • Stable funds for school budget  (in-state tuition is $12,192; out-of-state is $23,000)

Cons

  • Fears from Californians that preferences are given to out-of-state students

And what would happen if limits were set on out-of-state students at the UCs?

Pros

  • Smaller freshmen class size
  • Would reassure Californians that priorities are given to Californian students

Cons

  • Out-of-state student limits are tricky to determine
  • International students may be discouraged from applying to UCs
  • In-state tuition may increase

Whatever the UC officials decide, there is no clear-cut answer to the debate over out-of-state students.
