The Complicated Cost of a UC

According to the LA Times, Gov. Jerry Brown and UC President Janet Napolitano will soon meet as a committee to go over the costs and the spending of UC campuses. Their first meeting is reported to be scheduled for January 26.

Besides college costs, some other issues which may also be discussed include teaching loads and time needed to earn an undergraduate degree.

In a more recent LA Times piece, Peter Schrag pointed out the difficulties embedded in a conversation about UC costs:

In fact, UC doesn’t know exactly how it spends its money — and maybe it honestly can’t know. Is the salary for a teaching assistant — who is also a doctoral candidate working in her mentor’s lab — money for undergraduate instruction, for research or for graduate education? How do you distinguish a professor’s teaching from his research on a spreadsheet?

By spring, it will be seen if the meetings can unearth some productive plans to handle UC costs and tuition.
